My research examines the genetic basis of mammalian adaptation to the arid conditions of South-West Africa using genomic approaches. I will utilise whole-genome sequencing data to identify signatures of selection in seven large mammalian species that inhabit this desert environment. Incorporating local adaptation into the biodiversity conservation decision-making process is crucial especially Africa, where numerous species are threatened with extinction. This work provides an opportunity to fine-tune the ongoing conservation efforts and will potentially increase the likelihood of success in preserving Africa’s rich biodiversity from extinction.

About me
I studied Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Biology, Bachelor of Science Honours in Biological Sciences and Master of Science in Biological sciences at the University of Venda, Thohoyandou, South Africa. I am currently pursuing Doctoral studies at the same institution.
My research studies started with a project on the charismatic fox species, the red fox. I used shallow whole genome sequences to investigate its genetic structure, diversity and local adaptations. I am continuing with local adaptations on a diverse array of species including Africa’s megafauna. This will contribute to urgently needed conservation and management efforts for these species, helping to mitigate the risk of extinction.
